Gujarat Giants Women clinched a five-wicket victory against Delhi Capitals Women in Match 17 of the Women’s Premier League 2025 at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Friday, March 7. With this victory, Gujarat claimed their fourth win of the ongoing season.
Meg Lanning and Shafali Verma got their side off to a brisk start. Combining, they put on 51 in the first powerplay. The Delhi skipper was the aggressor of the two. Lanning stroked seven boundaries within the first six, looking all set for a big knock. A breakthrough was looking highly unlikely for the Gujarat outfit. With the manner in which the duo had navigated the powerplay, it seemed more than likely for a big total on the cards.
By the end of Meghna Singh‘s four-over spell, she ended up clinching a three-wicket haul. Shafali was her first dismissal. With the fall of Jemimah Rodrigues, who fell quite cheaply, Lanning had to tone down her approach a tad bit. Although Delhi managed to get to 177 at the end of 20 overs with the Australian top-order batter getting dismissed for her top score in the WPL for 92, it was a severely underwhelming display by the rest of the batters.
It wasn’t quite the ideal start Gujarat would have hoped for as far as their run-chase is concerned. They lost Dayalan Hemalatha early on. Hemalatha’s subpar season persisted, with the top-order batter departing after scoring just one off seven deliveries. Shikha Pandey was the bowler who provided the wicket. Gujarat were lagging behind the required run rate big time at the end of the powerplay, scoring only 38. They were 75/1 at the halfway stage.
Beth Mooney departed six short of her half-century, leaving Harleen Deol as the set batter at the crease. Ashleigh Gardner chipped in with a handy 13-ball 22. With 32 required off 18, Deandra Dottin provided just the late surge which Gujarat were in desperate need of. Jess Jonassen scalping wickets off consecutive deliveries brought a late twist to the contest, but Deol and Kashvee Gautam led their side to a successful run-chase.
