Capitals Beat Oilers, 3-2; Tom Wilson Scores 20th Goal Of The Season

The Washington Capitals downed the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night, 3-2. Logan Thompson stopped 30 of 32 shots faced in the win. The victory pushes the Capitals’ record to 32-10-5 (69 Points) on the season.

The Capitals once again turned to Logan Thompson (21-2-3, 2.09 GAA, .925 SV %, 2 SO) while Edmonton countered with Stuart Skinner (18-10-3, 2.70 Gaa, .901 SV %, 2 SO) in net.

1ST PERIOD

Leon Draisaitl opened the scoring three minutes into the opening frame, putting a backhand shot past Logan Thompson to give the Oilers an early lead; Darnell Nurse and Vasily Podkolzin recorded the assists.

Tom Wilson scored his twentied goal of the season on a 2-on-1 break with Aliaksei Protas, beating Stuart Skinner at 09:01 to tie the game at 1-1; John Carlson also picked up an assist on the play.

The two clubs ended the opening frame knotted at 1-1, with a 10-3 advantage in Shots on Goal for Edmonton.


2ND PERIOD

Matt Roy opened the scoring in the second moments after the Capitals’ first power play of the night concluded; he fired his second goal of the season past Skinner at 08:12 to give Washington a 2-1 lead. Pierre-Luc Dubois and Connor McMichael recorded the assists.

And that was it for the middle frame. The shots continued to remain in Edmonton’s favor, 26-9 and neither club failed to convert on their respective power play opportunities (one for Washington, two for Edmonton).


3RD PERIOD

The Capitals stretched their lead to 3-1 on Pierre-Luc Dubois’ ninth goal of the season at 3:49 of the final frame. Lars Eller (8) and Logan Thompson (1) had the helpers.

The Oilers answered with a blast from Corey Perry (8) at 4:50. Leon  Draisaitl (37) had the lone assist.

Neither club added to their totals, securing a 3-2 victory for Thompson and the Capitals, who finished with 14 shots on net to the Oilers’ 32, and now sits at 32 wins on the season.

Wilson’s goal marked the fourth time in his career that he has reached the 20-goal plateau, and he is now also one assist shy of 200 for his career.
