I have gotten word from our editors that I am supposed to provide a recap for today’s game. I was going to spend this afternoon putting together tomorrow’s rumblings and playing Avowed, but fine, I’ll write a recap.
Full disclosure: I did not watch this game. I can’t remember the last time I watched a full Spring Training game. Hell, I cannot even remember when I last watched a full Spring Training inning. Nor did I listen to it on the radio as I was busy bumping house music instead. Fortunately, thanks to the MLB Gameday feed and Baseball Savant I can find some neat tidbits to point out. An actual game recap seems pointless given the game doesn’t count for anything.
- It was a mixed bag for Michael Wacha in his first spring action. He punched out the first four batters he faced before hanging a sinker to Nick Martini that was hit 422 feet. Three of the next four batters would reach, but Wacha managed to complete the second inning. He threw five pitches at least five times and topped out at 94.9 with his fastball.
- The same could be said for Noah Cameron. He got six whiffs on 21 swings, four of which were on his cutter, but he also surrendered Martini’s second homer of the afternoon on a four-seamer that caught way too much of the plate.
- Michael Massey continued his hot spring, doubling on a 96.9 mph fastball up above the zone in the first inning before walking on six pitches in the third.
- Nick Loftin doubled twice on breaking balls that were pretty center cut, the first being a blooper off a sweeper and the second a curveball grounded down the left field line. He also drew a walk in which all four pitches were well out of the zone.
- MJ Melendez also had a couple knocks, ripping a meatball of a changeup for a hard single in the first and going the other way on a 97.3 mph sinker off the plate in the fifth.
The score was 7-6 Rockies by the way. The Royals are now 4-1 in their pursuit of the Cactus League title. They’ll be back in option tomorrow afternoon in Phoenix against the Brewers. The game will be televised on FDSNKC.
