Philadephia Flyers centre Scott Laughton would reportedly be jacked to suit up for the Toronto Maple Leafs if there is a trade that makes sense, sources told TSN’s Darren Dreger.
During Tuesday’s edition of Insider Trading with Gino Reda, Dreger provided an update on where things stand for GM Brad Treliving and what he hopes to achieve going into the trade deadline on Friday. He made it clear that the Leafs’ main focus is to add a centre and that Laughton would love the opportunity to don the Blue and White.
“You look at Scott Laughton of Philadelphia Flyers. Many close to Laughton believe that he would love to suit up for the Toronto Maple Leafs, if there’s a trade that makes sense.”
The Leafs are considered to be one of the frontrunners for Laughton via Daily Faceoff’s Anthony Di Marco and the asking price is set at a first-round pick or equivalent. While it is a steep price to pay relative to a player of his calibre, the fact that he would jump at the opportunity to play for his hometown team if the opportunity presented itself means the Leafs would be getting a motivated player. And Laughton seems to be aware that he could soon be on the move as evidenced by his viral photo of recreating The Last Supper.

Can't say for certain, but I wouldn't be shocked if TO is pushing the hardest. @DailyFaceoff https://t.co/lfkReoihL9

Dreger also touched on the rumours surrounding Brayden Schenn, but as of now, the St. Louis Blues still seem to be firm about keeping their captain.
“Well, he’s still focused on adding a centerman. The question is who is that centreman and what is the best available fit, Gino? And the reality is when you look around the trade market, the market hasn’t been officially set yet because of the playoff battles that exist in both the East and the West. So sure, the perfect scenario would be Doug Armstrong of the St. Louis Blues wakes up between now and Friday and says, ‘Yeah we’re in a playoff hunt, but you know what? We’re going to trade our captain.’ That is extraordinarily unlikely unless somebody absolutely blows Armstrong’s doors off. And hey, Toronto is willing to pay more than fair market value for Brayden Schenn, it just doesn’t seem likely and that might be a stretch.”
Of course, the Leafs will need to contend with the salary cap as they currently have just over $100K in space to work with at the deadline per PuckPedia. In addition to adding a centre, the Leafs will likely also want to improve their depth on the back end and perhaps add another forward if possible. All of which is to say, Treliving will have his work cut out for him if he wishes to accomplish his primary objective of getting better down the middle.
