Maple Leafs’ Steven Lorentz ruled out vs. Red Wings with upper-body injury

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Steven Lorentz was ruled out of Saturday’s game against the Detroit Red Wings due to an upper-body injury, the team announced prior to the start of the third period.

Lorentz departed early in the first period after taking an open-ice hit from Red Wings defenceman Ben Chiarot, only registering 1:17 of ice time before his premature exit.

This marks the second injury to the Leafs’ bottom-six after Scott Laughton was ruled out week-to-week due to a lower-body injury stemming from blocking a shot off his foot in a preseason game against the Red Wings. While it is unclear the extent of Lorentz’s ailment at the time of filing, his absence takes a hit to the team’s depth to begin the season.

Easton Cowan or Sammy Blais are expected to fill in for the time being while Lorentz works his way back from whatever is bothering him.

Lorentz is entering his second season with the Leafs after turning a PTO into a permanent spot in the team’s bottom-six. He scored 19 points (eight goals and 11 assists) in 80 games played, while adding two assists in 13 playoff games. He also brought much-needed physicality to Toronto’s bottom six, finishing second on the Leafs with 199 hits, while taking 73 in return and blocking 55 shots.

On June 30th, he inked a three-year extension with the Leafs that carries an AAV of $1.35 million. While there was uncertainty about whether or not he would be back, Lorentz always felt that he only wanted to be with his hometown team.

“It’s awesome, my heart was always here. I know I only played one year in Toronto, but I fell in love with it. How can you not, being a local kid?” he said during an appearance on Leafs Morning Take on July 2. “Three years, it’s the longest contract I’ve signed. I’m just proud and happy that the Leafs have shown that faith in me to be able to give me that extension.”
