Knee Jerk Reaction: Maple Leafs cruise to win vs. Flyers as Blue Jays fight for World Series
If you’re here after watching the Toronto Maple Leafs’ game in lieu of the Toronto Blue Jays’ win-or-go-home Game 7 against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series, I have to question you. If you were watching both games like I was, I can’t help but recognize the fellow insanity.
On that note, if you did watch the Leafs game in any capacity tonight, they made it worth your while, at least. The Maple Leafs came away with a 5-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers to kick off the month of November with two points and start things off on a high note.
The storyline of the game, for those who missed it, ended up being Easton Cowan’s first NHL goal. He took a pass from John Tavares and put a pretty shot far side over the shoulder of Flyers goaltender Daniel Vladar to extend the team’s lead to 4-1 in the first minute of the third period. Other goals in the game came from Auston Matthews, who opened the scoring, Jake McCabe, Nick Robertson, and Calle Jarnkrok on the empty net.

It unfortunately wasn’t a perfect night, in fact, there was a pretty big wound on the Maple Leafs’ side of things coming out of the game. Veteran defenceman Chris Tanev was involved in what appeared to be a pretty innocent looking collision with Flyers forward Matvei Michkov, but absorbed some hard contact on the back of his helmet and had to be removed from the game on a stretcher. Tanev had just returned from a similar injury involving his head, after he took New Jersey Devils forward Dawson Mercer’s shoulder to the jaw when the Leafs faced the Devils a couple of weeks ago.
Regardless of Tanev’s injury at the end, the team has to be happy with the way they turned things around on Saturday night and will look to keep the momentum up when they host the Pittsburgh Penguins.
