A scene from the new season of Faceoff: Inside the NHL shows Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube ripping into the players.

The scene in question occurs during the second intermission of Game 7 of the second round against the Florida Panthers. As the players head towards their lockers, Berube asks them to sit down so he can discuss their performance during the period.
At that moment, the Leafs were trailing 3-0 and had not been playing some inspiring hockey, which was evidenced by their body language as the players headed back into the dressing room. Captain Auston Matthews recognizes the situation and can be seen directing the Amazon camera crew to leave the room, simply saying, “Out” before Berube begins his speech.
While the cameras are not in the dressing room, the microphones still pick up what Berube says to the players, and it is clear he is not pleased with their play in the previous period.
“Come on, seriously? We’re better than this. A lot fucking better,” he yells. “ We gotta fucking go here. We get one, we’re right in it. Decide in here what you want to fucking do, cause it’s not fucking good enough.”
Berube getting heated with his players when they are not performing up to the standards set by him is not uncommon. On the first day of training camp, he was seen yelling at Group 1 for not moving their feet, as he felt they were not executing the drill well enough. During that same Game 7, the cameras caught him getting livid on the bench during the second period where he did not mince words on how he was feeling.

Berube has established a reputation as a no-nonsense coach who wants to play a direct game and makes his instructions clear to his players. When he feels the players are not performing to the standard he has set, he isn’t afraid to let them know it because he wants everyone to do their part to ensure the team gets the win. Some players may not gel well with this form of tough love, but the Leafs players have appreciated Berube’s coaching approach.
Season 2 of Faceoff: Inside the NHL is out now for streaming on Amazon Prime, with a primary focus on William Nylander.
