Braves Minor League Recap: Waldrep looks great, Caminiti causes concern

Sunday saw Hurston Waldrep have a very strong start, grand slams from Jarred Kelenic and Douglas Glod, and a good pair of games from John Gil during a doubleheader. Unfortunately the story of the day is going to have to be Cam Caminiti, who not only battled command – but also left the game with the trainer in the third inning.

Statcast

  • Jarred Kelenic, CF: 1-3, HR, 2 BB, R, 4 RBI, .216/.314/.338
  • Stuart Fairchild, DH: 3-3, 2B, BB, 2 R, SB, .417/.462/.500
  • Nacho Alvarez, 3B: 2-5, 2 RBI, .500/.600/.625
  • Hurston Waldrep, SP: 6 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 6 K, 5.84 ERA

Hurston Waldrep turned in a very strong start in this one for Gwinnett. Waldrep lasted six innings, giving up a run on seven hits and a walk, with six strikeouts and 12 swings and misses. For a guy who has been a bit uneven this year, this was the kind of outing that shows what he can do when everything is working right. Jackson Stephens followed by allowing a run over an inning of work, and then Michael Petersen and Wander Suero each went a scoreless inning.

The offense was really clicking in this one, led by Stuart Fairchild. Fairchild was a perfect three for three with a double, walk, two runs scored, and a stolen base. Another recent addition to the roster, Nacho Alvarez, went two for five and batted in a pair of runs. Cover Capel went three for four with a double, steal, and two runs scored. Finally Jarred Kelenic hit a grand slam and drew a pair of walks. Matthew Batten, Eddy Alvarez, and Jason Delay all had a hit and a walk, with Batten picking up a double.

Knoxville Smokies 9, Columbus Clingstones 2

Box Score

  • Ethan Workinger, RF: 1-3, BB, .258/.378/.401
  • Geraldo Quintero, LF: 1-3, 2B, R, .254/.342/.345
  • Landon Harper, SP: 3.2 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 2.58 ERA

Landon Harper had earned another shot at starting, and he got rocked in this one. Over three and two thirds innings, he allowed six runs (four earned) on nine hits and a walk with five strikeouts. The lone positive was the fact he had the five strikeouts with 13 swings and misses. However despite this game his ERA rises only to 2.58 on the season, so it can be treated as a blip. Tyler LaPorte allowed an unearned run over the next inning and a third, followed by two runs in two innings by Amos Willingham. Austin Smith and Kolton Ingram each tossed a scoreless inning of work to complete things on the pitching side.

Offensively there isn’t much to talk about. Ethan Workinger singled and walked in four trips to the plate, while Geraldo Quintero doubled and scored a run in his three trips. The only other Clingstone to have much to talk about offensively was Chandler Seagle, who singled and batted in both Columbus runs. David McCabe was hitless in four at bats in this loss.

Box Score

  • Ambioris Tavarez, SS: 1-4, 2B, .232/.332/.308
  • Patrick Clohisy, LF: 1-3, BB, R, .239/.340/.339
  • Cedric De Grandpre, SP: 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 7 BB, 2 K, 3.27 ERA

It was Cedric De Grandpre’s turn to start and he battled through not having command through three innings of one run ball. Cedric walked seven and threw just 39 of his 77 pitches for strikes, but he kept Greensboro in check and did pick up eight swings and misses. Riley Frey followed and allowed four runs in an inning, with Rob Griswold going a scoreless inning next. Down 5-1 after five Rome turned to first baseman Bryson Horne for the rest of the day. Horne pitched four innings and allowed five runs (three earned) on 10 hits and just one walk in his second relief appearance in the last week – the other being two thirds of an inning.

Rome’s offense just couldn’t get going as they managed just one run on four hits. Ambioris Tavarez and Keshawn Ogans each doubled, and singles from Justin Janas and Patrick Clohisy accounted for the rest of the hits. Clohisy also walked and scored the lone run for the Emperors, with Ogans batting him in.

Box Score

  • John Gil, SS: 1-3, 2B, BB, R, .245/.342/.313
  • Owen Carey, CF: 1-4, 2 RBI, .273/.348/.370
  • Cam Caminiti, SP: 2.1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 4 BB, 0 K, 4.91 ERA

The second full season start by Cam Caminiti was no where near as good as his first one. He didn’t have his command right from the jump, and finished with a final line of two and a third innings, three runs on four hits and four walks with no strikeouts. He was also responsible for two wild pitches and a balk as he basically threw just half his pitches for strikes (53 pitches, 27 strikes). Things went from bad to worse for Cam when he exited the game with the trainer in the third inning, as we wait on an update. Albert Rivas came on and got the next two outs, giving way to Adam Shoemaker in the next inning. Shoemaker allowed an unearned run over an inning and two thirds, with Seth Keller allowing the final three runs over his inning and a third.

Offensively the biggest performer had to be John Gil, who doubled, walked, and scored a run. If not him, it would be Owen Carey, who singled and batted in a pair of runs. Besides Gil the only players to reach base multiple times were Colby Jones, who singled and walked, and Colin Burgess, who also singled and walked. Isaiah Drake did reach base once with a walk in the loss.

Box Score

  • John Gil, SS: 1-2, 2B, 3 BB, 2 R, RBI, SB, .248/.351/.319
  • Douglas Glod, LF: 2-4, HR, BB, 2 R, 4 RBI, .192/.364/.325
  • David Rodriguez, SP: 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K, 4.10 ERA

David Rodriguez started the second game and was excellent, not allowing any baserunners over three scoreless innings with two strikeouts. Unfortunately the bullpen didn’t pitch as well as he did, which turned this into a closer game than it should have been. Justin Long was next up and didn’t have his command, as he gave up a run over two thirds of an inning due to four walks. Reibyn Corona allowed three runs over the next inning and a third, and finally Juan Sanchez allowed a pair of runs over a pair of innings, which also included four walks.

John Gil and Douglas Glod carried the GreenJackets offense in this one. Glod was two for four with a homer and walk, picking up four runs batted in thanks to his grand slam. Gil was one for two with a double, took three walks, stole a base, scored twice, and batted a run in as he filled up the boxscore. Three other GreenJackets reached base multiple times in the win, as both Mason Guerra and Colby Jones walked twice, and Isaiah Drake went one for four with a walk. Everyone else in the lineup reached base in this seven inning game, including a hit from Owen Carey and a walk by Nick Montgomery.

Swing and Misses
