For the second straight season, the Leafs will be featured SIX times on the Prime Monday Night Hockey broadcasts —all home games.
That’s where the conversation started on the latest summer edition of Leafs Morning Take. Most importantly, Toronto dominated their Prime slate this past season, so hopefully that continues in 2025-26. Then, we got into a recent fan poll out of The Athletic that ranked the Leafs broadcast team 30th out of 32. Honestly, that left us a bit confused. Chris Cuthbert and Gord Miller are two of the very best. We think Leafs Nation is fortunate to have those two calling games for the Maple Leafs. It’s a fan poll after all.
Brought to you by Simply Spiked, we talked some Nick Robertson. Per Puck Pedia, the RFA winger’s arbitration hearing date has been set for August 3rd. Imagine being a fly on the wall for that discussion? For the third straight offseason, there’s been a lot of speculation about Robertson’s future in Toronto. Has he played his last game as a Maple Leaf? On paper, it feels that way. He’s still on the roster, but ultimately, there doesn’t really seem to be a fit for him. A few days ago, our Jeremy Tingly listed Winnipeg, Nashville, and Pittsburgh as potential trade fits for Robertson.
After that, we reacted to Dakota Joshua choosing to wear Phil Kessel’s No. 81 in Toronto. Of course, there’s the whole testicular cancer tie-in as well. By all account, Joshua’s pumped to be a Leaf. The idea of a Joshua-Roy-McMann third line has been floated out there, and honestly, it sounds rather enticing. We’ll see if Craig Berube feels the same way in training camp.
A few months removed from their demoralizing Game 7 loss, there’s no question the team to beat in the NHL remains the rival Florida Panthers. It’s still perplexing to think about what went wrong in both Game’s 5 and 7. Slowly but surely, Brad Treliving has been chipping away at the offseason in attempt to improve. Mitch Marner and Pontus Holmberg are the only two players not on Toronto’s current roster that were part of that Game 7 lineup. Furthermore, the Leafs have added Roy, Pezzetta, Joshua, and Maccelli to the fold. We’ll see how it looks on the ice, but we both agreed that the depth – especially in the bottom-six – is much better present than it was.
We’ll be back on Friday at 11 AM ET for another summer edition of Leafs Morning Take. Join us as we discuss the latest talking points, plus AEW star Adam Copeland will make another appearance on the show.
