The Leafs should aim higher than Jack Roslovic to fill gaping top six hole: Leafs Morning Take

For all intents and purposes, this is probably the final week of legitimate activity around the NHL before things quiet down for the summer.

With that in mind, the Leafs have prioritized finding a top six forward, so maybe that comes together over the next few days.

At the very least, there are many out there who think we could see a plethora of trades go down.

Carter Hutton was in for Jay Rosehill on the Monday edition of Leafs Morning Take. We kicked off the show by discussing some things that didn’t happen over the past few weeks for the Maple Leafs. Apparently, they sniffed around on a J.J. Peterka trade. Additionally, as we were reported weeks ago on the show, there was mutual interest between the Leafs and Andrew Mangiapane. Unfortunately, he didn’t want to wait around for the team to move around bodies out. Instead, he picked Edmonton. It is what it is.

At any rate, after that, we got into the Jack Roslovic conversation. On the latest edition of 32 Thoughts, Elliotte Friedman disclosed that he thinks the Leafs are in on the free agent centre. On paper, it makes a lot of sense. He shoots right, can play centre, and has history (U.S. Development program) with Auston Matthews. In 81 games with Carolina this past season, Roslovic notched 22 goals and 39 points.

Furthermore, we debated the idea of the Leafs signing Evgeny Kuznetsov. Now 33, the 2018 Stanley Cup champion is reportedly eyeing an NHL return following one season in the KHL. In 39 games with SKA St. Petersburgh, the Russian pivot tallied 12 goals and 37 points. For the record, we were both lukewarm on the idea.

Lastly, Nick Robertson got married over the weekend. Over and above that, he was one of 11 NHL players to file for salary arbitration. Honestly, there’s no telling where this goes. It feels like the writing’s been on the wall for Robertson in Toronto for years. Maybe he comes back for another year? It doesn’t seem like there’s an end to his tenure in sight.

Jay Rosehill will be back in the mix for the Tuesday edition of Leafs Morning Take. Join us at 11 AM ET as we sift through the latest news and notes surrounding the Maple Leafs.
