Game Recap
In the opening period, both teams controlled the play at times, but neither got on the board. The Maple Leafs outshot the Sharks 10-7 and went 0-for-2 on the power play. The Sharks were 0-for-1 with the man advantage.
On the power play, Toronto finally broke the deadlock at 8:28 of the second period, on a Tavares tip-in off a point shot by Mitch Marner.
Knies extended the lead to 2-0 on another power play goal with five seconds to go in the period. Auston Matthews passed the puck across the crease to Knies, who won a battle with Marc-Edouard Vlasic and put the puck in the net for his 24th goal of the season. This is the fourth time this season that Knies has scored in three straight games.

Thompson put the Sharks on the board at 2:23 of the third period off an Alex Wennberg shot that missed the net and deflected off the boards, catching Stolarz out of position, and right onto Thompson’s stick for an easy open-net goal.
Toffoli tied the game at 2-2 halfway through the period, as a Wennberg wrap-around pass caught Stolarz out of position again, which gave the Sharks another open-net opportunity. For Toffoli, it was his team-leading 23rd goal of the season.
The Maple Leafs had a 4-on-3 power play in overtime, but couldn’t capitalize, leading to Zetterlund winning the game for the Sharks on the fourth shot of the shootout. William Nylander for Toronto and Toffoli for San Jose were the other goal-scorers in the shootout.
The Maple Leafs outshot the Sharks 27-21 and went 2-for-5 on the power play. The Sharks were 0-for-2 with the man advantage.
